In a case where you switch to next generation then the install you make on the Xbox Series Consoles will be the nextgen version of the game and you save progression continue in nextgen version of the game. Buying the Smart delivery games only right now is a smart decision as you will of course switch to new consoles no doubt because the current gen production of consoles will soon stop.
